Methadone Addiction Treatment for Heroin and Opioid Addicts in California

Methadone is a controversial substance that is prescribed to men and women as a substitute for heroin and other opiod drugs (like OxyContin). Our treatment center has a history of helping men and women overcome Methadone addiction as well as providing treatment for people who suffer heroin/opiate addiction without Methadone.

Heroin and opiate addiction is an insidious disease that can be so difficult to overcome that some rather controversial methodologies have been developed to improve the lives of heroin addicts (read an interesting news article about the phenomenon of prescribing heroin to treat heroin addicts).

One such method is the administering of Methadone as a substitute for heroin

Methadone Maintenance

methadone storyMethadone is usually distributed as a liquid that is swallowed.  There are also tablet and injectable versions of Methadone. Methadone provides a "safer" and less intense euphoria than heroin. While Methadone is still an addictive substance, Methadone is at least  distributed in known quantities (reducing the likelihood of overdose).

Problems with Methadone Maintenance

Methadone is addictive. Methadone is a safer substitute for heroin addiction, but the person who is on Methadone is not really living a life in recovery and free from the shackles of addictive behavior which can ruin their lives and the lives of all who care about them.

Also, Methadone dependent individuals are prone to:

  • take higher doses than prescribed
  • mix methadone with other drugs (or alcohol)
  • sell the methadone to buy heroin

These types of addictive behaviors should indicate that while Methadone is a preferable addiction to Heroin addiction, it is still an unhealthy lifestyle.

Getting Treated for Methadone Addiction

Ideally a person who is on Methadone should graduate to a residential treatment program for opioid dependency.  This person will be provided with a structured program of recovery that will give them the supervision and support to maintain sobriety on a daily basis (or help them gradually reduce their intake of Methadone).

A well rounded treatment center program of recovery will keep the patient occupied with frequent workshops, lectures, 12-Step meetings, and therapy sessions while also mixing in enjoyable outdoors activities that are esteem building, physically challenging, and ultimately show the addicted individual that life without Methadone can be very enjoyable.

Sober Living by The Sea has numerous residential treatment programs that allow a personalized treatment schedule for the person who needs a clinical setting to overcome Methadone addiction.
