Men's Long Term Residential Drug Treatment Center
Our extended residential drug rehab program often referred to as "long-term" rehab, allows newly sober men to thrive in the recovery community of Orange County while living in a structured residential treatment facility.
For over 23 years, our extended care program has been the preferred referral destination for men who have matriculated through the nation's top "30-day" primary care programs. Clients who have come "out of the fog" in their initial 28- or 30-day program come here when they are ready to continue their care in a structured, "real world" environment. Forbes.com has recognized our extended care program as one of the world's ten best rehabs.
Extended Residential Drug Rehab = Better Outcomes
The greatest predictor of whether a man will remain sober after
treatment is the amount of time he spent living in a
structured
rehabilitation environment. We designed our long-term extended care
program based on our years of experience which showed us that men who
continue their rehab beyond the first 30 or 60 days of "lock down"
treatment will be more likely to transition back into society without
relapse. The extended care program allows men to gradually "step down"
in the level of supervision and structure they receive, and be
monitored by our staff of clinicians who will continually modify the
man's personalized treatment curriculum based on their ongoing
assessments.
After our extended care program, men often are anxious to resume their education or career with the support of our counseling and residential facilities. That is why we offer popular programs like the T.E.A.C.H. Sober College Program and the Transitional Work Rehab Program .
Sober Living by the Sea offers the entire continuum of care from detox to outpatient. Please visit the overview of our rehab programs to learn about the entire cycle of treatment.

Because there are only so many hours in a day that a man can effectively be counseled and educated about addiction and relapse prevention, we take full advantage of our location in Newport Beach, California, by requiring the men to participate in outdoor activities and to rebuild their strength through exercise. Some of our outdoor activities include:
- Beachfront Barbecues
- Sailing off of the Newport Coast
- Sports Fishing (weekly) off of the Newport Coast
- Amusement parks like Disneyland, Universal Studios, and Knott's Berry Farm
Some of our physical activities include:
- Daily 24 Hour Fitness gym visits
- Softball
- Golfing
- Yoga
There are also enriching and esteem-building activities like:
- Art Museums
- Sawdust Festival
- San Diego Zoo
- Long Beach Aquarium
- Church Visits (optional)
You can see a complete list of activities on our rehab activities page.
Men Have Unique Needs in Treatment
Studies have shown that men experience drug addiction differently than women, and have different reasons for turning to drugs and alcohol in the first place. Men who are in our extended care program often struggle with anger management or defiance. Some men, particularly those in treatment for methamphetamines or in treatment for ecstasy, struggle with depression and anxiety as their brains adjust to living sober.
The men in our extended care program are housed in gender-specific homes where they build a connection with other recovering men (and their male "house parent"). The men who live and work with our clients intimately understand these issues, as most of them have experienced recovery from alcoholism or drug addiction in their past. The men in our rehab program benefit from being able to form a cohesive social network with other recovering males where they feel safe to discuss any topic or experience and can concentrate on their recovery without worrying about social approval or the impression they may be making on others.
The men will participate in some co-ed group therapy sessions, workshops, and 12-step support meetings as part of the closely monitored integration back into the "real" world from the security of the rehabilitation program. Throughout their participation in our extended care program, men will always be required to participate in some "men's only" 12-step meetings as well as gender-specific house meetings and daily meditations. Of course, the men will be continually receiving one-on-one therapy with their counselor (typically male counselors are assigned to male clients, but occasionally a female counselor is recommended based on our assessment and the client's history).
