Sober Living by the Sea has been successfully treating alcoholism, drug addiction, and eating disorders for over 23 years right on the beach in beautiful Newport Beach, CA.

Sober Living by the Sea’s extended care program allows men and women in early recovery to test their life skills in a more independent setting while continuing to receive addiction treatment. Mornings typically begin at 7 a.m. with a hot cup of coffee and meditation on the beach to help residents get focused for the day.

In preparation for their return to community living, residents make their own breakfast, do their own grocery shopping and meal planning, and have assigned chores they complete before leaving the house, such as cleaning the kitchen, taking out the trash or tidying up their living space.

Around 9 a.m., residents hop on their beach cruiser and ride over to our treatment center. With a few deep breaths of ocean air in their lungs and the sun’s rays on their faces, residents are ready for a full morning of process groups, lectures and workshops.

Around noon, patients ride their bikes back home for a nutritious lunch, and hit the local gym or enjoy any number of strength- and esteem-building activities, such as beach volleyball, yoga, softball, basketball and many others. The rest of the afternoon is filled with therapy sessions and workshops addressing relapse, coping skills and other recovery-related topics.

In the evenings, residents are free to go to the beach, swim in the ocean, and enjoy the many restaurants and activities in the Newport Beach area. Trips to Disneyland, Universal Studios, art museums and other popular attractions are a highlight for many residents. Nightly AA/NA meetings are a requirement that ensures that residents continue working their program of recovery.

Patients in extended care check in seven days a week at our treatment center, but enjoy a more relaxed schedule on the weekends. On Saturdays patients can participate in drum circle, gender-specific groups, and life skills training on topics like budgeting, meal preparation, job hunting and others. Religious services are available for those who wish to attend.
