Staff Blog: Great Treatment Centers Resemble Great Restaurants

by slbts — last modified May 10, 2011 05:29 PM

I worked in Food and Beverage for several years and then treatment for the last 7 years, and the more I think about it the more I am starting to believe they have a lot more in common then one would think.

First is location, location, location

  • Most great restaurants have an owner or owners
  • Most great treatment centers have an owner or owners
  • Both will have an Executive Director, Human Resource Managers, Supervisors etc.
  • The Chefs could be compared to a Treatment Centers Case managers and Therapist
  • The Treatment centers drivers could be compared to the restaurants runners
  • The waiters and waitresses or (servers) could be compared to the treatment centers support staff
  • The dishwashers could be compared to the cleaning crew
  • The bus boys could be compared to the maintenance crew
  • The host or hostess could be compared to the admissions staff
  • Both would have their IT people
  • Both businesses if all goes as planned will be extremely busy.

A Critical Position of Need for Successful Treatment Centers and Restaurants

Both successful businesses learned fairly recently that a new position had to be developed to ensure efficiency, accuracy, timing, and the ultimate customer satisfaction.
That position is barely known to the public though it maybe be the keystone for either one of these successful businesses.
That position is called an expediter. This is one that directs traffic and foresees problems. In the treatment world this maybe an assistant to the case managers that is calling the parents or loved ones and fielding questions and concerns. This allows things to flow smoothly.

There is a fine line between a very successful  business and one that is out of control.
The expediter is often the determining factor.

Kelly KWe are going to call you first - before you call us. How is that for customer service?
It is our business to be one the right side of a fine line.
