Putting Half the Effort of Drug Using into Your Recovery by Kelly K.

Kelly K. challenges you to exert half of the effort toward your recovery from your addiction as you exerted when you were pursuing drugs and alcohol.

"Half" The Effort For 2010

The book of Alcoholics Anonymous challenges us to put half the zeal into our recovery that we would put into protecting the lifestyle or getting that next drink or drug.

I know for myself that drinking and drugging was a 7 day a week 24 hour a day job. I ruined my closest relationships with friends and family members and employers. My addiction cost me my freedom and any connection to a Higher Power. It got to the point towards the end of my using that if I had another bridge to burn - I would have burned it.

Imagine if we all – all alcoholics and drug addicts - put a quarter of the zeal (let alone half of)  the effort into working a solid program of recovery every single day.

The book says that  while none of us liked  the self searching, the leveling of pride, or the confession of short comings that the recovery process requires for its successful consummation.

Though so many of us with sober time (and some have a lot) do have lives beyond our wildest dreams, it does not mean that we particularly liked doing some of the work that is required.  Pain so often is a great motivator.

We are given the option to either:

a) pick up the spiritual tools that have been laid at our feet

or

b) we can choose not to treat our addiction and follow it to the bitter end, blotting out the consciousness of our intolerable situation as best we can.

If You are Tired of Living the Way you Have Been Living – Welcome Home

If you are sober though you can honestly say I could be working a little or a lot harder – then good news – we have a daily reprieve: "Welcome Home."

If you are lonely and do not know what to do with yourself – we welcome you to find us, many of us feel and have felt that way: "Welcome Home."

I pray and hope that all of you have the same happiness I wish for myself and pray that all of us find the desire to give our recovery – "half the zeal" – we would put into getting that next drink or drug.

I would also like to share a poem I wrote, it is also a song I sing to many of our clients from time to time. I encourage you, to send us your poems for viewing on one of our sites if you have a desire.

Kelly Kettle New GoodINSIDE JOB

I used to think – if I took a trip – bought a new house – got a fast car –
and lots of pretty girls – and all the coolest friends – I’d be OK!

If I had a great job – if I did all the best drugs – if I lost some weight –
maybe got some sun - the pain would go away!

I would finally master fear – after 20 lonely years  - of crying inside tears

Looking for the fix – in lifes big bag of tricks!

If  I could sing a melody – for this vicous malady

Would it be reality - as I stepped on my whole family – looking for some friends

Because I can’t go back to where I’ve been- Because I burnt those bridges to the end
And I lost my best friend – and I didn't even know it.

My life flashed before my eyes – I could no longer take the lies

Suddenly it occurred to me – That all my life – I seeked outside things

TO FIX A INSIDE JOB

Because I can’t go back to where I’ve been – Because I burnt those bridges to the end
And I lost my best friend.

But if I listen I can hear him whisper in the wind – and he says SON!

Sometimes, you've got to – "surrender to win"

Though I can’t tell you how to do it – "surrender to win"

Because I can’t wait to see you – "surrender to win!"
