New Drug "Spice" – Another Way to Let Your Addiction Win

Kelly K. wears his heart on his sleeve when he works with people in recovery. Kelly cares a great deal about giving people guidance and direction in their treatment. In this entry he discusses whether or not it is considered a relapse to use substances like Spice or Robotussin.

Spice - Legal MarijuanaI am pretty upset about this new mood altering substance called Spice.  It is mood altering – although it may not have been legally classified as a controlled substance yet. As treatment providers, it is extremely sad (and always has been) to watch despairing family members suffer as an alcoholic or drug addict destroys his or her  own life -  affecting everyone around them.

As alcoholics and drug addicts we often suffer from a hundred forms of fear.  We try to get by using self delusion, self seeking, and self pity. Just when a treatment center like ours is able to get new people on the right track – whamo some genius comes up with another way to beat the system - like Spice (or robo tripping, or whippets, or...)

We have a saying in the rooms of recovery that "nobody is too stupid for the program ...but there are a few us that are too smart."  And that ability to find a "loop hole" through sobriety (like Spice) can be fatal.

The war against addiction is hard enough without being compromised by new and "legal highs." As treatment providers, we reluctantly accept the fact that we are often times only able to plant seeds – for when people are ready to surrender and begin working a program and allow others to help them.

We really did not need this one more hurdle.  Recovery is a privilege it is not an option.

It is my understanding that the new unclassified drug Spice – is banned in at least 3 Countries and also 3 states here in the US.

Is it a Relapse to Smoke Spice?

These "legal" mood altering substances have no place in treatment: Spice and Robotussin (Robo Tripping). These affect you from the neck up.

Spice is mood altering. Are you  wondering if it a relapse to smoke Spice?

That would be between you, your sponsor and your higher power. Let your conscience be your guide.

If you are ever asked to try either of these 2 things in or out of treatment – please give yourself a break. Let a staff member know or run and call your sponsor.

If people are able to stick around long enough to see the miracles and be rocketed into a fourth dimension of existence they will understand why many of us say: "If staying clean and sober was not much better than using, then we would not still be clean and sober."

I WOULD LOVE TO BE ABLE TO SMOKE SPICE BUT, IF YOU THINK ABOUT IT. IT IS A MIND ALTERING EXPERIENCE SO IN MY OPINION IT WOULD BE A RELAPSE/SLIP.
I HAVE 4 MONTHS SOBER AND IM ON MY 10TH STEP. I HAVE NOTICED ONCE I START TRYING TO FIGURE OUT IF I CAN SMOKE AND DRINK CERTAIN STUFF WITHOUT IT BEING A RELAPSE, IM IN "RELAPSE MODE". SO BE TRUE TO YOURSELF AND TO YOUR PROGRAM AS A WHOLE.

THANK-YOU FOR LETTING ME COMMENT.

However, when you shop online for these herbal incense products, you should make sure that the online wholesaler is reliable and provides authentic herbal incense products. Due to the immense popularity of many of the brands of Spice herbal incense blends, many individuals have come up with fake products to cash in on the demand. Make sure that your online wholesaler is renowned and well established in his business and deals in genuine brands.

I am living a sober life. I know what addiction looks and feels like. My wife is addicted to this stuff. It's sickening. She is still in denial. She tells me she is quitting in the morning, and stumbles in high when she comes home from work. The addiction is REAL people!!! REAL!!!! If there was ANY way that I could neutralize the smoke, and of course the legal issues, I would prefer she actually smoked marijuana. Oh, and of course, after you are buying 2-3 packs of the s$%^ a day... it does get expensive.
