California dual diagnosis treatment centers will soon have the benefit of becoming more standardized for and this will improve treatment for men and women who come to treatment for addiction and are experiencing a Co-Occurring Disorder (COD).

The California Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs has issued a statement that the Co-Occurring Disorders Joint Action Council (COJAC) is endorsing the use of the Dual Diagnosis Capability in Addiction Treatment (DDCAT) instrument.

The Dual Diagnosis Capability in Addiction Treatment instrument is an index that will be used to analyze the capability of drug and alcohol treatment centers to effectively treat dual diagnosed addiction clients. This survey will critically analyze the processes and policies of a treatment facility to rate their performance in combining the treatment of addiction with a dual diagnosis such as:

  • an anxiety disorder (ie. post traumatic stress disorder or PTSD)
  • depression
  • bipolar disorder
  • attention defecit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

or any other mood or behavioral disorder.

Being that Sober Living by the Sea has been treating alcohoism, drug addiction, and eating disorders since 1986 here in Orange County California, it follows that we have continually contributed to and followed the best practices for combining the treatment of a chemical dependency with a mood or behavioral disorder.

As we have seen in recent years the stigma of alcoholism and drug addiction reduced greatly as these afflictions gain acceptance as medical conditions, we welcome the latest decree by the California Department of Alcohol and Drug programs because it will improve the quality of dual diagnosis treatment in California as well as increase awareness that chemical dependency is a disorder that warrants medical treatment just like depression and other mental health problems.
