Suggestion can be powerful in centuries past it was thought that pain was a result of punishment by god for the sins of those inflicted and the concept that the body was the true source of pain was rejected. Even back in those days medical practitioners realized the complexity of pain. Case in point, amputated limbs still produce the sensation of pain, which supports the idea that the mind (not the body) was responsible for the source of pain.
