We've written many times about the dangers of Vicodin and prescription drugs in general. There are some good reasons to recommend the ban of Vicodin and this blog entry discusses some of them.

A Vicodin Ban on the Horizon?

A review of the facts about Vicodin addiction::

1.    People who use Vicodin for more than couple of weeks will develop a physical dependency and a tolerance to the effects of the drug
2.    People who develop a Vicodin tolerance will need to take ever greater quantities of the medication to achieve the same analgesia (or euphoria)
3.    People who take high doses of Vicodin run a serious risk of liver damage due to Vicodin abuse

Because of the dangers inherent in Vicodin, an FDA advisory panel voted in June 2009 to recommend a ban on both Vicodin and Percocet (another opiate that mixes in acetaminophen). The FDA is not required to heed the recommendations of advisory panels, but it usually does.gavel judge

Vicodin may soon be pulled from the shelf, but until it is, those that use it need to take care not to exceed the daily acetaminophen maximums.

vicodin for treatment

Last year when in Maryland for business, I got hit by a car and ended up in a hospital in Baltimore where they gave me Vicodin for the pain. Since this time I have suffered from pain in my legs due to damage to the nerves in my lower back and legs. I cannot buy Hydrocodone in my country where Oxycontin is the only medication prescribed for more severe pain, and while I have no problems obtaining a prescription for this drug, I find it considerably more addictive. When recently reading about findrxonline I was wondering if US online pharmacies (or regular ones) can ship Vicodin or Lortab to other countries if I obtain a prescription from a doctor in the USA? Any knowledge regarding is much appreciated. Thanks.

Ban on Vicodin

Yes, Vicodin can be addicting. It is up to the individual taking this medication to take it correctly and to doctors to monitor their patients. It is easy for some to say there should be a ban on Vicodin, but to those who live in daily pain, keeping them from simple daily activities or enjoying their children or grandchildren, Vicodin can give them their lives back. We are not addicts because we take Vicodin as long as we take it as directed. It is important to watch the amount of Vicodin taken, not only for the effects of hydrocodone, but especially for the negative effects of Acetaminophen, the other medication found in Vicodin. It is true that after taking Vicodin for an extended length of time one will require help in stopping the drug to keep from going into withdrawal, but those who depend on Vicodin for pain relief or who are thinking about taking this drug, should consider this fact into their decision to use this medication in order to make a final decision as to rather to use Vicodin or to choose another path to pain relief. The decision, however, should not be up to the government but to the individual.
Some physicians draw up a contract with the patient to help keep track of how the patient is taking their medication. This is a good idea and should be used by all doctors prescribing this medication as a safety measure and to help prevent drug abuse. Some people cannot tolerate or find no relief from other types of pain medications or cannot afford alternate therapies, even if they apply to their situation. They should not be condemned to a life of pain when relief in the form of Vicodin is available. Again, taking a medication as directed is not abusing or addiction.
