We took some of our clients on a special trip to the UC Irvine Pow Wow on Sunday May 23rd. Native American culture was on full display and it was a stimulating and educational day.

UCI Pow WowLisa and Jay took a few of our clients to UC Irvine in May to learn more about the  Native American culture that existed in California for generations before the arrival of European settlers.

A Pow Wow is a gathering that is meant to honor, respect, and celebrate native culture. There are always some amazing food items (like fry bread) that people eat as the walk around and look at the booths that highlight the history of indigenous cultures in the area.

Drumming and dancing are a big part of the Pow wow experience and as you can see, the authentic make up and dress of the participants can be quite stunning and beautiful. UCI Pow Wow 2

Jay and Lisa are staff members who are dedicated to the recovery of our clients and try to enhance that recovery by exposing our clients to new experiences like attending Native American  Pow wows like this one at UCI. Jay and Lisa will even provide the opportunity for our clients to participate in interesting therapeutic processes like drumming, "journeying," and sweat lodges.

Lisa is a massage therapist and Jay heads up our outpatient treatment program.  Lisa and Jay's knowledge of these types of cultural activities and processes are a great enhancement to the pow wow 3addiction treatment at Sober Living by the Sea's treatment centers which is grounded in 12-Step principles and traditional psychological modalities.
