Steven East is an addiction treatment expert who discusses the phenomenon of treating addicted people using acupuncture.

In the removal or reduction of chronic pain there is another fascinating factor that affects treatment and that is the conditioning of the person's belief system by factors such as upbringing, media, or other influences.

Case in point: an individual who believes that acupuncture or acupressure techniques are less likely to be effective will have less of a chance that the procedure will benefit them. The influence our peers, family, radio, and television can have a large impact on how we approach the treatment of chronic pain.

Bias towards surgical, pharmacological and holistic methods can be deep rooted.

Another case in point is hearing someone say that their back surgery only made there pain worse might influence an individual to not have surgery. Unbeknown to our individual the back surgery was a success but the other individual had collateral psychological issues that inhibited their recovery.
