To the Families and Loved Ones of Those Suffering from Addiction and Alcoholism

Dr. Kevin McCauley makes sure that clients receive an education about the phenomenon of chemical dependency to strengthen their recovery

With our 23 years of experience treating substance abuse at our California Treatment Centers, our staff is intimately familiar with how the family of the man or woman who is drinking or abusing drugs can be torn apart.

There are the mothers and fathers who suffer through sleepless nights worrying about the well-being of their son or daughter. There is often a spouse or significant other who has experienced the hurtful and irresponsible actions of the man or woman whose behavior is shaped by their chemical dependency. The children of men and women who are alcoholic or abusing drugs often exhibit mood disorders and suffer greatly because of the abuse and neglect that occurs in a home where drugs or alcohol are being abused.

The mothers, fathers, and spouses of the men and women who arrive here in sunny Orange County, California know that underneath the careless and hurtful actions of the substance-abusing man or woman is their child, husband, wife, or significant other whose life is controlled by their drug of choice. The stress and hopelessness that come as a result of caring for someone who is suffering from alcoholism or drug addiction can destroy lives.

Taking Care of Yourself

It is very important that the family and loved ones of the person in need of addiction or eating disorder treatment realize that they are also experiencing stress and suffering greatly as a result of the addiction. Addiction is a disease, and there are many factors that contribute to its development. It can be highly destructive for the family or loved ones of an addicted individual to blame themselves or feel guilt about the onslaught of this disease.

It is important that a family member reaches out to us to begin the process of recovery for their loved one. Our team of professionals knows how to answer questions and show family members that there is hope for their loved one who suffers from addiction. In addition to lending a caring ear, we can recommend one of the tens of thousands of support groups that are available for the loved ones of men and women who suffer from chemical dependency.

A Program of Recovery for the Entire Family

The treatment programs at our drug and alcohol treatment centers are designed to provide help for the entire family system involved in the recovery process. Depending on the treatment program that is most appropriate for your loved one, the patient may not have telephone access for the first few days to two weeks. However, the case manager and treatment team will be in touch with the family of the man or woman in treatment immediately and often.

The clinical staff at our California drug rehab center is here to patiently answer questions you will have about your loved one's recovery. We have 23 years of experience in building a strong nationwide network of mental health professionals and therefore, have the ability to refer you to highly regarded therapists, doctors, psychiatrists, psychologists, and addictionologists in your area should you seek further treatment or information. After the client's initial "no contact" period, the family is welcome to come to Southern California and attend group family counseling sessions at our rehab facilities. We feel that the family can be an integral part of the man or woman's long-term recovery program, and we welcome the family into the resident's "wheel of treatment."

Structure and Guidance for the Loved One in Treatment

As soon as your loved one arrives here at our Southern California network of alcohol and drug treatment centers, he or she will be screened and assessed by our intake department, and an admissions counselor will begin the process of designing an individualized treatment program.

Every man and woman at our treatment facility has tasks that he or she must complete which help foster responsibility and accountability. All clients are housed in gender-specific facilities, and our experience has shown that keeping all of the men or women working together with the others in their treatment home helps them form bonds of fellowship with each other and the staff (many of whom are in recovery themselves).

The men and women who arrive here in Orange County for drug and alcohol treatment are taught to make their beds neatly, and start their day on a positive note. This sparks the process of building positive self-esteem. Throughout the day, they participate in recovery-oriented activities, including physical activities that break up the steady stream of workshops, support groups, and therapy sessions. The women and men will be required to keep their living area clean, and wash their own laundry correctly. Other household chores help build structure and discipline into the men and women's lives, which greatly aids in recovery.

No More Sleepless Nights

Men and women who come to Southern California to start a new life in recovery with us will quickly clear their minds of the drugs that are controlling their lives, and see that they must work on their recovery to begin a new life that is greater than they could have ever imagined.

While the man or women is at our treatment center, the family can rest assured that he or she is in a safe and supervised location without access to drugs or alcohol. The family is welcome to come to the monthly "family program" to participate in their loved one's recovery program and be a part of the man or woman's new life free of drugs and alcohol.
