Success Stories

At SLBTS Treatment Centers, we began with a vision: to offer chemically dependent clients a special place to call their own while going through treatment for their disease; namely a place where they could turn their lives around. According to clients over the years, that goal has been reached time and time again.

Most recently, our programs have been earning national as well as international recognition. Maybe that's because so many of SLBTS clients successfully overcome their addictive behaviors. Clients learn that while there is no "cure" for chemical dependency, they have the power to change their lives and manage their disease. They have options and can make alternative choices. They can truly live drug- and alcohol-free. How do we know? We receive their letters of gratitude every day. Here are just a few...

Letters of Gratitude

From a grateful parent...

"It occurred to me your reported successes are not frequent and few people ever say thank you. The enclosed [Commencement Ceremony Program] represents both a big success and this letter is a big thank you. Exactly three years and one day after starting at Sober Living by the Sea, Anne Z earned her Masters in Social Work. So, thanks to all at Sober Living by the Sea for your part in Anne's success. Best Regards" May 13, 2006

From a grateful alumnus...

I just received an e-mail from Alumni Services, which reminded me that I wanted to send an update on how I've been doing.  I now have three years, one month and thirteen days of sobriety under my belt, and it feels amazing.  I live with my wonderful sober boyfriend in the beautiful little beach town of Santa Cruz, where I currently work as a barista (still drinking the coffee!) and take classes at UCSC.  On November 9 of 2005, I conquered my one remaining addiction - cigarettes - and have now been smoke-free for four months and seven days.  If someone had told me three years ago that in a few years I would be sober and loving life in a sleepy Northern California beach town, I would have laughed and asked what they'd been smoking, but lo and behold, here I am today.  I often think about SLBTS and about how incredibly fortunate I was to arrive there when I did.  I truly believe that SLBTS saved my life, providing me with a place to break free of heroin's death grip, and the tools to stay clean.  I shudder at the thought of what could have happened to me otherwise.  All I can say is thank you, thank you, thank you.  I have my life back again, in all its gloriousness.  Keep doing what you're doing and reaching out, because it truly works. From a grateful alumnus…

"In the last six months I have had to face things that I never wanted to face. Without your help and guidance, that would have never been possible. There is a lot I could say about being a part of SLBTS; however, I would just like to say thank you for showing me a new way to live and look at things. If it weren't for you, who knows where I would be right now, assuming I were alive, that is. I have a great amount of gratitude and the utmost respect for the kindness you have shown me and my family.

"I have seen a different way to live and it is up to me to take action. I will do everything in my power to make my life manageable and meaningful. I do not know what the future holds for me, although I do believe it is a future without drugs."

About UsFrom a grateful mother…

"When my son entered treatment at your center, I thought the problem was his alone. I didn't realize how much the pain and trauma in my relationship with him had affected my own life and emotional health.

"His counselor suggested that I attend Al-anon meetings. I didn't know what good it would do, but I took his advice. After just two months of attending, so much healing has happened in my life that it's like a breath of fresh air!

"I started attending Al-anon meetings in the middle of my son's treatment, but should have begun sooner. If there's anything I'd like people to know who might have a loved one going through treatment right now is that they should start attending Al-anon meetings the first week their loved one enters treatment. That way, they can begin their own healing process right away."

From an alumnus who learned the joy of living sober…

"Finding Sober Living by the Sea saved my life … a life that is so good today because of the healing that took place at your center I can hardly recognize it as my own! There just are no words to express how happy I am about the path I'm on now. Thank you…"

From a grateful alumnus. . .

"I graduated from SLBTS Dec. 11, 1996. SLBTS was one of the most wonderful experiences of my entire life."

From a man who watched his son's life change…

"My son came to you from a hospital setting. His situation was at the time dismal. But after eight months, he was able to move out of your center to live independently, with the agreement that he would stay in close contact with his counselors. He would also attend school. Your team of hard-working counselors was there for him every step of the way.

"They went beyond the call of duty in helping my son attain his high school diploma. They helped him with school papers, assisted him in meeting deadlines and gave him a place to turn whenever he needed advice. Every member of our family thanks the people of Sober Living by the Sea. What you all did on behalf of my son enabled him to change his life. You gave him tools to make better choices. For that I cannot thank you enough. He truly couldn't have done it without you.

"I know that if my son ever stumbles, you'll be there for him. And that's very comforting, especially now that he's attending college, where he'll be forced to make the right choices to achieve his new goals."
