Focus on the Family

The St. Louis (Kirkwood) branch of Sober Living by the Sea hosts numerous 12-Step support groups each week and hosts family groups for the families of recovering addicts and alcoholics to learn more about:

  • the disease of addiction
  • how codependency and enabling can contribute to addiction
  • how to approach a loved one who is chemically dependent
  • how to deal with the struggles of having a loved one who suffers from addiction or alcoholism

The St. Louis office of Sober Living by the Sea is a great resource for the families of men and women in need of recovery, regardless of how acute that person's addiction is and whether or not that person needs to receive residential treatment. However, many of the clients who receive treatment at Sober Living by the Sea's main treatment centers in California hail from places in the Midwest like Springfield, Columbia, and Ladue, and some even come through our St. Louis office from southern Illinois.  These clients or their families originally contact and work with the treatment specialists at our St. Louis (Kirkwood) office for assessment and to plan treatment in California, if necessary.  Then, the St. Louis office provides continuing family support groups for the loved ones of the person in treatment, both during the person's treatment and after their return.

The Sober Living family support group in St. Louis is a critical element in the successful recovery of our patients.  When family members learn about alcoholism, chemical dependency, and other diseases of addiction, they are better able to help the addict sustain his or her recovery.  In addition, family members find their own recovery and gain a realization that they, too, are powerless over alcohol and other drugs.  By offering a setting in which family members feel supported by staff and other families, they can share their feelings, their frustrations, their fears, and most importantly, their hopes about their loved ones who are working to manage their addiction.

Why Is the Sober Living St. Louis Office so Successful at Working with Families?

kirkwoodpic.jpgIf you were to ask the individuals who have experienced the Sober Living St. Louis family support group why it is so helpful, the answer that you're likely to get is that the Sober Living St. Louis staff is truly dedicated to the well-being of family members.  The staff  listens carefully and caringly and has much experience in the treatment of addiction – a disease that affects the whole family.

In addition, the tone of the family support groups causes family members to support one another in a unique, positive, and very powerful way.  During the family support groups, relationships develop such that family members have not only the professional staff to turn to for help, but they also have people whose loved ones are sharing the challenge of dealing with addiction.  The dynamics and synergy of the family support group are remarkable to witness.

Family and Workplace Interventions

Sober Living St. Louis staff members have years of experience in helping families and other concerned individuals plan and execute interventions.  While we take the position that it is always preferable to have the alcoholic and/or addict voluntarily participate in a clinical evaluation, sometimes the only way that he or she will participate in treatment is when loved ones, friends, co-workers, and others undertake a well-planned and well-executed intervention.

A call to the Sober Living St. Louis office is the first step in determining whether or not an intervention is necessary and appropriate.  From that point forward, the dedicated Sober Living St. Louis staff will educate, train, and facilitate an intervention that is most likely to result in the alcoholic and/or addict moving toward an appropriate treatment setting.

What to Expect When Calling for an Assessment/Evaluation

A clinical evaluation or assessment at Sober Living St. Louis can usually be arranged within 2-3 days of an initial call for help.  An evaluation involves an hour-and-a-half interview with the individual who is experiencing problems with alcohol and/or other drugs.  At the end of the evaluation, the individual will have a competent opinion about:

1) whether or not he or she is an addict (according to current professional criteria);
2) the extent of the illness;
3) the likely course of the illness if it is not addressed through an appropriate level of treatment; and
4) the level of treatment that is appropriate for the extent of the illness.

At Sober Living St. Louis, we naturally refer many people to the various programs of Sober Living By The Sea.  But it is not unusual for us to refer to other programs, either in the Midwest region or in other parts of the country, depending upon the unique individual needs of the person seeking help.  We are driven by our desire to help individuals and families find the most effective and appropriate treatment based on their needs.
